Cuffs and Protests by Layla Holiday

The Police Force Academy prepares you for almost everything, besides the prospect of arresting your own girlfriend when you—and the rest of the riot squad—swarm her peaceful protest.

Kat Kody is a hard-working, and capable copper, but shudders at the thought of handcuffing and detaining Elle. Kat imagines how it will feel to grab Elle’s fine wrist, swing her around, slam her against the bonnet of the car and cuff her hands behind her back.

Cuffs and Protests, the first Cops Gone Wild story, is a tease . . . but it is a damned intriguing one. It is one of those stories that works on multiple levels, playing to three genres at once.

At its heart, it is a romance between Kat and Elle, lovers whose careers have placed them at odds with one another. There is real tension there, but there is also some delicious eroticism. Sure, the kinky cop fantasy might be overdone, but when you have the right equipment for restraining a lover, why not use it? Besides, as we see later on, Kat does not always get to be in charge.

As for why they are at odds, there is an environmental protest that Elle is part of and which Kat, as a cop, is duty-bound to break up. That tension is genuine, and I really liked how Holiday used it to explore the conflict between duty and passion, and beliefs and responsibilities, for both women.

What is most intriguing about the story, however, is the darker, more horrific story thread introduced in the final pages. Kat has been working a brutal murder, a crime scene that has her waking up from nightmares of a body in a bloody tub. There may be a serial killer on the loose, and . . . well, I will say no more, but it does make for one hell of a cliffhanger.
